Dominican president defends two terms in office, never three

Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, Apr 23 (Prensa Latina) Dominican President Luis Abinader said that in an eventual constitutional modification he would defend that the prohibition of a third consecutive presidential term remains unchanged, it was reported on Tuesday.

Abinader told local media that ‘he will never change the terms of election.’

This is what we have advocated and will continue to do so.

It is necessary to place a ‘padlock’ to the Constitution, so that no president, regardless of his majority in Congress, can change the terms of election,’ he added.

He stated that as president, the two main reforms he seeks to promote are the one related to the re-election issue and the independence of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

During his traditional meeting with representatives of national media, Abinader presented a report on the progress made in Santiago de los Caballeros during his administration (2020-2024) in areas like education, health care, infrastructure, electricity and water.

In this regard, he pointed out that the Government inaugurated 11 educational centers, while the Santiago Cable Car project will transport 64,000 passengers as of May 1 and the re-conduction of electrical networks currently benefits more than 134,000 families.

He also mentioned that 14 projects have been executed in the sports sector in different areas of Santiago, including the completion of the Tamboril Sports Center. More than 6,000 people have benefited from the delivery of 1,682 apartments in Hato del Yaque, Los Salados and La Barranquita, and five health centers have also been built, Abinader told reporters who gathered at the Gran Teatro del Cibao, in Santiago de los Caballeros.
