Russia will respond to the confiscation of its assets in the US

Moscow, Apr 22 (Prensa Latina) The president of the Russian State Duma, Viacheslav Volodin, stated that Moscow will respond to the seizure of its assets immobilized in the United States and other nations.

Volodin wrote on Telegram that the vote of US legislators in favor of this action gives Russia the right to adopt symmetrical measures in relation to foreign goods.

The parliamentary leader also called Washington’s decision a theft, which “will destroy the principle of the inviolability of property and cause irreparable damage to international law.”

In Volodin’s opinion, Washington wants the European Union, where most of Russia’s immobilized assets are located, to take “a similar step, which would be devastating for Europe’s economy.”

A law passed by the House of Representatives asks President Joe Biden to enable the creation of “an international mechanism related to the reuse or seizure of sovereign assets of the Russian Federation for the benefit of Ukraine.”

The bill, which was passed on April 20th with a vote of 360 in favor and 58 against, states that the reuse of Russia’s assets “is in the national interests of the United States and is consistent with U.S. and international law.”

The United States has frozen Russian assets worth between four and five billion dollars, out of a total of 300 billion immobilized throughout the world.

Volodin considers that the fact that Washington has considered seizing this money is a testimony that “it has stopped believing in the victory of the Kiev regime.”
