Cuban sports glory expresses pride for attending Olympic Games

Paris, Apr 21 (Prensa Latina) Cuban former 400- and 800-meter runner Ana Fidelia Quirot valued the importance of competing in the Olympic Games and feeling followed by millions of people at home.

I can tell you that for an athlete to attend these events is the best, it is to experience the pride of representing millions of people and the opportunity to appreciate closely the symbol of solidarity, friendship and unity of the peoples who are represented, the two-time Olympic medalist (silver in Atlanta-1996 and bronze in Barcelona-1992) told Prensa Latina in this capital.

Quirot, who is also a two-time world champion in the 800-meter run, participated recently in a promotional event of the Adidas brand, which chose outstanding athletes and para-athletes and sports glories from fifteen countries to present uniforms, footwear and other attires prior to the Paris-2024 games, which will begin on July 26.

The athlete said that she treasures with great love the interest of millions of Cubans in following her performances in the international arena, and insisted on the relevance of the Olympic games less than 100 days before Paris-2024.

I am accompanied by the satisfaction of what I did for my country and of having felt the support of its people, always watching television, radio and reading the written press in every major competition, she stressed.

In the case of the Olympic Games, she insisted that they are somehow special, ‘because although it is often said that we prepare for them for four years, the truth is that since we take our first steps in sports we dream of competing in them.’

Of course, winning a medal is the greatest feeling, or being a finalist in some event, but the mere fact of participating is an immense joy and an unforgettable memory, she added.

The multi-Olympic and world medalist also expressed pride for representing Cuba, which she described as a small, underdeveloped and blockaded island with relevant results in various fields.
