Egypt regrets UN’s failure to admit Palestine as a full member

Cairo, Apr 19 (Prensa Latina) Egypt expressed deep regret on Friday following the inability of the United Nations Security Council, due to the US veto, to issue a resolution enabling Palestine to be admitted as full member of the United Nations.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that the Palestinian cause is at a crossroads that requires the international community to assume its historic responsibilities.

Faced with this situation, it called to support the rights of Palestinians and establish “a political horizon to restart the peace process to reach a definitive solution” to the issue.

Recognizing the Palestinian State and approving its full membership in the United Nations is an inherent right of this people who have been subjected to Israel’s occupation for more than 70 years, the document stressed.

The Foreign Ministry considered that this step essential to implement the provisions of international law and establish the two-State solution.

Addressing the Security Council on Thursday, Egypt’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations, Osama Abdel Khalek, condemned Israel’s aggression against the Gaza Strip, where 33,000 people have been killed and 76,000 have been wounded over the past six months.
