Prisoners in Ecuador vote in early voting day on popular referendum

Quito, Apr 18 (Prensa Latina) A total of 5,338 people deprived of freedom are authorized to vote in Ecuador as part of the early voting day on the popular consultation and referendum on security, justice and employment.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) informed that in 41 prison, the inmates without a final sentence can cast their vote on all 11 questions contained on the ballot proposed by Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa.

CNE President Diana Atamaint explained that the process will be developed under control and surveillance of the Armed Forces and the National Police, and added that since Wednesday night, soldiers have been deployed to protect polling stations throughout the country.

At the end of the voting on Thursday, the boxes containing the inmates’ ballots will be sealed and transferred to the control center in each province, since those votes will be counted on Sunday, when the majority of Ecuadorians in the country and abroad will go to the polls, Atamaint explained.
