As one of the most significant events for the region’s film industry in this city, this edition fulfilled an ambitious program of screenings accompanied by prestigious experts, filmmakers, and the public in general.
Known as Havana Star, the awards will be delivered after a week of screenings and debates at the Quad Cinema, the Festival’s main venue.
The 2024 official selection included the Cuban feature films “Bajo Un Sol Poderoso” (Under A Powerful Sun) by Enrique Álvarez, “El mundo de Nelsito” (Little Nelson’s World) by Fernando Pérez, “Mujer Salvaje” (Wild Woman) by Alán González, and “Una noche con los Rolling Stones” (A Night With The Rolling Stones) by Patricia Ramos.
The Cuban documentary films “Landrián” by Ernesto Daranas, “Retorno” (Return) by Blanca Rosa Blanco, “Santa Canción” (Blessed Song) by Juan Carlos Travieso, and “La leyenda de Arsenio” (Arsenio’s Legend) by Rolando Almirante also reached the New York screens for the first time thanks to the festival.
This 24th edition was also dedicated to two Cuban filmmakers: film director Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and documentary filmmaker Nicolás Guillén Landrián, whose works were also screened at Hofstra University in New York.
After its official opening on April 12, the HFFNY screened more than 30 Latin American films, most of them world premieres.
