In an interview with the newspaper Al Ahram, Moussa criticized the body, especially its veto power, because “there is an obvious conflict of interest. (…) The resolutions that must be adopted are hindered at the last moment by differences between powers, which limits the role of the Council,” he stressed.
Regarding the Palestinian issue, Moussa stated that it is an integral part of Cairo’s policy, which is why it is working to find a fair solution under international standards. Egypt flatly rejects the displacement of the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip as part of a strategy to liquidate the Palestinian cause, he said.
“After the Hamas attack on October 7th of last year, we have a new situation in this region because the issue is once again at the center of world attention,” he stressed.
Amr Moussa also noted that, in recent years, some Western countries did everything possible to reduce this issue to free normalization with Israel. “The advanced speeches focused more on common interests at the expense of the rights of the Palestinian people, were maneuvers aimed at diverting attention from the real cause,” he criticized.
Despite the intense pressure, history will remember that Egypt was the first country that supported and defended the rights of the Palestinians to self-determination, he stated, and affirmed that “we have moved on to a different reality that no one can deny anymore: the need to recognize an independent Palestinian state.”
