As a consequence of a strong adjustment implemented by Javier Milei’s Executive, the hospital and the university are seeing their operations at risk and declared a budget emergency.
During the last few days, professionals and students carried out actions to make visible the situation in public education and the threats against its continuity.
Recently, the university issued a note stating that “in current conditions, the possibility of maintaining all activities to guarantee the quality, research, extension and the healthcare function are seriously affected (…) Public education is a pride of Argentine society that is based on the pillars of secularism, free education, autonomy, inclusion, teaching with the highest quality, development of research, and commitment to the social environment, which is why it requires adequate financing to the development of their activities,” the dispatch added.
The statement specified that the UBA faces a critical situation due to the Government’s decision to maintain the 2023 budget values in 2024, despite a record 276-percent interannual inflation, which places the UBA at risk of underfunding, compromising essential functions such as university and pre-university education, scientific projects and medical care to more than half a million patients per year in university hospitals.
The associated hospitals did not receive any resources from the Executive, and the budget for operating expenses of the UBA for the current year had a cut in real terms of 80 percent.
The university statement expressed support for a march to Plaza de Mayo, on April 23rd, in defense of public education and to demand the corresponding funds for university hospitals.
