“The capital’s port must reopen immediately to bring new supplies. We also need unhindered access to transport food throughout the country to ensure the continuity of our projects,” WFP Country Director Jean-Martin Bauer said.
WFP is doing everything possible to reach the most vulnerable citizens. At the current rate, we will run out of food by late April,” said Bauer, who warned that Haiti is on the edge of a devastating hunger crisis.
“Haitians are on the brink of collapse: one in two people are hungry today. Rising hunger is exacerbating the country’s security crisis. We need to act now: waiting to respond to the full scale of this situation is not an option,” the WFP director stressed.
Violence and riots are hampering the delivery of food and other humanitarian assistance.

PMA teme al agotamiento de sus reservas de alimentos en Haití
Puerto Príncipe, 17 abr (Prensa Latina) El Programa Mundial de Alimentos (PMA) en Haití teme por el agotamiento de sus reservas en el mes en curso, debido al cierre de la terminal portuaria y al clima de violencia que vive hoy la nación caribeña.
“El puerto de la capital debe reabrir de inmediato para traer nuevos suministros. También necesitamos un acceso sin trabas para transportar alimentos a través del país para garantizar la continuidad de nuestros proyectos”, expresó el director del PMA aquí, Jean-Martin Bauer.
El PMA está haciendo todo lo posible para llegar a los más vulnerables, pero al ritmo actual, nos quedaremos sin reservas de alimentos a finales de abril, manifestó Bauer quien advirtió que Haití está cada día más cerca de la hambruna.
“Los haitianos están al borde del colapso: una de cada dos personas pasa hambre hoy. El aumento del hambre está exacerbando la crisis de seguridad del país. Necesitamos una acción urgente ahora: esperar para responder a esta situación en toda su magnitud no es una opción”, subrayó el director del PMA .
La violencia y los disturbios obstaculizan la entrega de alimentos y otro tipo de asistencia humanitaria.
