This was stated by the president during his speech at the Extraordinary Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), convened by the pro tempore presidency in charge of Honduras, to examine the events of last Friday, April 5.
“If the government of Mexico decides to go to the International Court of Justice and the United Nations, we will accompany it,” former Vice President Jorge Glass, who was violently removed from the Mexican diplomatic legation by security forces, should be reinstated in his right to asylum, Petro remarked.
Ecuador has violated international laws, it has violated the right to asylum, the right to due process and, to that extent, I will have to accompany the government of Mexico in its decisions, he stressed.
He also mentioned in his speech that Colombia canceled the bilateral cabinet with Ecuador that had been planned with the previous president of that country, Guillermo Lasso and that was scheduled to be held on April 25. As part of his speech, Petro pointed out that the act carried out by Ecuador can only be defined as barbarism.
Comparatively it is not the same as what happened with the Iranian embassy or what is happening with Gaza, or even how the Middle East is rushing into war, it is not comparable, but it has to do with the same thing: barbarism , he commented in reference to Israel’s attacks.
Ecuador, he stated, is repeating a message that comes from times when only death and exile were possible.
“I don’t know for what reason, why a president who has so little space in his presidential term, unleashes or allows such barbarism to occur. “Ecuador and Israel are practically shaking hands in the competition for barbarism and that cannot be,” he expressed.
After the raid on its diplomatic headquarters in Quito, Mexico broke diplomatic relations with Ecuador, while countries and organizations around the world expressed their rejection of the event, considered a flagrant violation of the principles of international law.
The rotating leader of Celac and president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, inaugurated the extraordinary summit that is being held between the heads of State and Government of the bloc, and after it there were other voices of support for Mexico and condemnation of the events of the 5th of April.
