His speech will take place in the context of the Extraordinary Virtual Summit of Heads of State of CELAC, convened by the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, who rescheduled the event at Mexico’s request.
During the session, López Obrador will offer details of the recent complaint presented by his Government to the International Court of Justice, requesting the suspension of Ecuador from the United Nations until it offers a public apology for the raid on the Mexican embassy in Quito on April 5th to arrest former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas, who had obtained political asylum from Mexico.
At the time of the forced entry into the embassy, Glas had an arrest warrant in Ecuador for alleged embezzlement of funds in the reconstruction of two provinces affected by an earthquake.
The CELAC troika (Honduras, Colombia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines) previously analyzed the situation in an extraordinary meeting and then convened the foreign ministers to debate what has become a crisis between Ecuador and Mexico, focused on taking action after the disrespect for international conventions that recognize the right to asylum.
Other organizations in the region also called emergency meetings with this issue on the agenda and the consequences for Ecuador, which could face sanctions due to the violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the Asylum Rules of the Caracas Convention.
