In talks with SBS News, the Ecuadorian president assured that he feels on the “right side of history”, despite global condemnation for storming into a diplomatic headquarters and violating international norms.
Also questioned about the Vienna Convention, which for six decades has ruled on the inviolability of embassies, Noboa considered that there are ” mistakes” not only in this treaty, but also in the Caracas Treaty on political asylum.
One of Noboa´s claims was Mexico violated the stipulations of these regulations because it granted asylum to Glas who was sentenced by the justice system, although many consider he is a political persecuted person.
When asked about how he will solve today´s crisis with Mexico, Noboa said he would invite his counterpart Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to eat ceviche or tacos and thus be able to talk, although that will happen “when he is ready”.
Past Friday a court of Ecuador’s National Court of Justice declared Glas’ detention “illegal” and “arbitrary”, but kept him in prison as he has pending convictions.
On Monday, after a visit paid to the United States, President Noboa attended a scholarship grant event in the coastal city of Guayaquil, where he claimed that “he is a terrible enemy to have”.
In the event, the ruler called to vote Yes in the popular consultation of next Sunday, April 21, on security and employment, although social and political movements qualify this procedure as unnecessary and deceitful, which endangers sovereignty and seeks for labor precariousness.
