According to the Deputy Director General of the U.S. Directorate of the Foreign Ministry (MINREX) Johana Tablada, such a position will be kept by Deputy Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio at the 38th round of bilateral migration talks to be held on Tuesday in Washington D.C.
At the meeting, the Cuban side will present top-priorities to curb the migration wave – which the official estimated at over 500,000 people by 2022 – growing as a result of the tightening of the hostile and unjust U.S. blockade.
Tablada claimed that the impact of the extreme and inhumane US steps, aimed at destabilizing Cuba´s economy and discrediting campaigns, are the main incentive for unprecedented rise in the migratory flow experienced since 2019.
In those dialogues, Cuba will insist on the pressing need to resume the granting of non-immigrant visas in Havana, as well as to respect the right of travelers from third countries to visit Cuba without being exposed to reprisals.
It will further demand that the United States comply with all agreements reached including the return of those who migrated irregularly since January 12, 2017, of all those intercepted at sea, and the elimination of privileged treatment for Cubans who migrate irregularly.
It will also request to stop the use of federal funds to finance main media and digital platforms that stimulate irregular emigration, as well as the involvement of high-ranking government officials in those discredit communicational operations.
In this regard, the diplomat denounced that the United States, in order to satisfy the specific interests of a few, harms Cuban families on both sides, the US population and the international community.
