Colombian House of Representatives debates education bill

Bogota, Apr 15 (Prensa Latina) The plenary session of the Colombian Chamber of Representatives is resuming on Monday the second debate on the Statutory Education Bill, which seeks to acknowledge education as a fundamental right.

During the last session in which the proposal was discussed, 13 out of 20 articles were approved, so the legislative initiative reached 86 percent of approval and voting.

Among the articles approved is the extension of the right to early education, which includes progressive access to the three preschool levels (pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and transitional year), compulsory secondary education (10th and 11th grades), and the one that acknowledges higher education as a fundamental right.

Another achievement of the plenary session was approving the block of articles that included the essential elements of the right, according to the jurisprudence of the Constitutional Court.

Alirio Uribe, representative of the Historical Pact, pointed out that the project allows for equity and equality, improves the quality of education, allows education to be a fundamental right, and universal education is from early childhood to university.
