Brazilian university teachers go on strike over salary adjustments

Brasilia, Apr 15 (Prensa Latina) Professors from universities, technological education centers and federal institutes in Brazil will stage a strike for salary adjustments and better working conditions.

Teaching sources indicated that the strike, which has significant support in all regions, set in motion a demand for a salary increase of 22 percent, to be distributed in three parcels.

The first quota is still planned for this year, with the subsequent ones for 2025 and 2026. The category seeks not only a salary restructuring but also attention to working conditions and investments in educational centers.

The National Union of Teachers of Higher Education Institutions (Andes-SN) highlighted the need to reverse austerity measures that severely impacted the sector in recent years, highlighting the restrictions on pension rights and the inhibition of the right to go on strike.

Gustavo Seferian, president of Andes-SN and professor at the Federal University of the state of Minas Gerais, emphasized the urgency of a restructuring in the careers of professors and the repeal of restrictive provisions previously implemented.

The press indicated that the scenario presented by the union reveals that three universities have already paralyzed their activities, and others will join the movement starting this Monday. Furthermore, several institutions indicated their possible adherence, pointing out the seriousness and extent of the situation.

The Ministry of Education admitted that it is committed to negotiating, looking for ways to value the employees of the sector and address the demands presented.

The Institution also highlighted that “it has been making every effort to seek alternatives for the valorization of education workers, attentive to frank and respectful dialogue with the categories,” and noted the readjustment granted by the federal government to public authorities in 2023.
