National Police Deputy Chief Kornchai Klaiklueng stated that many people started their return to Bangkok and other big cities, paving the way for accidents and heavy traffic.
On Sunday, 317 accidents were reported, with 38 deaths and 311 injuries, the official added.
As part of measures to ensure safety, Kornchai pointed out that the Traffic Police will coordinate with their provincial counterparts and intensify checks at all roadblocks, especially near event venues and during the night.
The National Police explained in its latest report that the main causes of traffic accidents during Songkran week were speeding (37.22 percent), followed by drunk driving (25.87) and poor visibility (15.46).
Most of the accidents (87.51 percent) involved motorcycles, and many of them (20.92) involved people between 20 and 29 years of age.
