Mexico´s President celebrates decision on morning conferences

Mexico City, Apr 12 (Prensa Latina) Mexico´s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador celebrated on Friday the decision of the National Electoral Institute not to prohibit his usual morning conferences, and considered it a shame that the opposition had requested it.

The head of State deemed that a different resolution by that body, in charge of regulating the process with a view to the elections next June 2, and defining the rules for the participants- would have been a flagrant violation of the Constitution.

“It is shameful that they are requesting the cancellation of a conference where the people’s right to information is being asserted. It is an act of censorship. It is an attempt to silence us, to keep us quiet, when democracy is debate, dialogue,” the president assured in the press conference from the National Palace.

“The important thing is that they recognize they cannot prohibit the morning conferences,” Lopez Obrador said remarking “that they are very desperate,” in allusion to the request presented by the candidate Xochitl Galvez, of the right-wing alliance representing the National Action, Institutional Revolutionary and Democratic Revolution parties.

The presidential candidate of the ruling coalition “Seguimos haciendo historia,” Claudia Sheinbaum, is ahead of Galvez, her closest contender, by a margin of over 15 points, and in some cases by 20 or more, according to polls published in recent weeks, in the run-up to the elections.
