Ecuador is awaiting the decision of the National Court of Justice on the habeas corpus request of the former vice president, who was arrested during a raid on the Mexican Embassy in Quito.
The judicial hearing, which began on Thursday at 16:00 hours (local time), was extended until 04:00 hours on Friday morning and will resume in the afternoon at 15:00 hours.
Glas, who is staging a hunger strike in La Roca prison, in the coastal city of Guayaquil, asked the court to return his asylum status, while authorities asserted that this is not a possibility because there are sentences against him and an arrest warrant.
The violent raid by the military and police on the Mexican Embassy in this capital continues to be repudiated by the international community.
Mexico severed diplomatic relations with Ecuador, filed a complaint against Quito at the International Court of Justice, and requested Ecuador’s suspension from the United Nations.
