DRC: M23 rebels attack boats on Lake Kivu

Kinshasa, Apr 11 (Prensa Latina) Boat owners in the province of South Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), accused rebel members of the March 23 Movement (M23) of carrying out selective attacks on Lake Kivu.

According to statements made to Radio Okapi, the insurgents attacked vessels heading from Minova in South Kivu to Goma in North Kivu by shelling them from the surrounding hills.

Insecurity situation and fear of citizens and landowners could lead to suspension of navigation activities on the lake, which would put the feeding of millions of people at risk.

The war has made many land routes impassable, so that a good part of resources move between the two eastern provinces of the DRC by river.

On Thursday, a precarious calm was reported on several front lines in the territories of Masisi and Rutshuru, in North Kivu, after several days of fighting.
