African organization to mark day to remember Rwandan genocide

Kigali, Apr 11 (Prensa Latina) The East African Community (EAC) informed that it is considering the possibility of declaring April 7 of each year as the Day of that sub-region, in remembrance of the genocide occurred in Rwanda in 1994.

According to a press release from the organization, the proposal, which is based on the need to ensure that the massacres in Rwandan territory should not be repeated anywhere in the region, will be considered in the next few days by the Council of Ministers of the entity.

According to the deputy secretary general of the EAC, Andrea Aguer Ariik Malueth, the economic and integrationist organization also intends to establish strategies to prevent the occurrence of acts of genocide in this area, through discussions to reflect on these harmful practices and their causes.

Recently, the African Union organized, at its Ethiopian headquarters in Addis Ababa, a forum with the slogan “Remember, Unite, Renew”, in which the Rwandan ambassador to that entity, Jean Charles Karamba, expressed that the identity of his country is based on the strength of the survivors and the dignity of the people.

Three decades ago, between 800,000 and one million Rwandans, mostly Tutsis and Hutus of moderate political behavior, were the fatal victims of extremist factions for nearly three months, actions that were condemned by the international community.
