At the Great Hall of the People, the Chinese president reiterated that compatriots on both sides of the strait are Chinese, so “there is no problem that cannot be solved, no issue that cannot be discussed, and no force that can separate us.”

Xi told his interlocutor that distance cannot break the bond of brotherhood between the two sides, and the difference in systems “cannot change the objective fact that both sides belong to the same country and the same nation.”

“External interference cannot stop the historic trend of the reunification of the homeland,” the Chinese president added.

He noted that throughout history, citizens of the mainland China and Taiwan have maintained a close connection, helping each other.

Ma, in turn, said that “a war between the two parties would be unbearable and the two sides of the strait are wise enough to prevent a conflict.”
