The wide array of regulations on migration matters, in force since 2015 have been broadened now by adding principles to filter potential migrants abroad and to simplify regulations for their expulsion outside the European Union (EU).
Similarly, the new measures include the possibility of payment by any of the 27 EU members to the budget of that bloc as a condition for refusing to accept outsiders for specific quotas.
After 10 years of blocking this document, the European Parliament decided to ratify the EU pact on migration and visa facilitation, Mirgaritis Sjinas said, who is deputy head of the European Commission for the defense of the European way of life.
This is a complete overhaul of the EU’s migration rules and the EU will now be able to conduct its migration policy in an orderly manner and on its own terms, the authority said.
The EU’s migration policy became one of its most controversial issues, especially, after the crisis observed in 2015, when over 900,000 migrants arrived in EU countries in that year, 75% of whom came from Syria, Afghanistan or Iraq.
At least 3,000 people perished almost a decade ago, mostly in the attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea in flimsy or overflowing boats, in an effort to flee, mostly from armed conflicts.
Amid the crisis, European nations debated a quota system for accepting foreigners, but the final document on how the problem should be tackled remained largely undefined for almost 10 years, according to the capital’s press.
