Revolutionary General Strike in Cuba, an approach to victory

Havana, Apr 9 (Prensa Latina) Cubans are commemorating on Tuesday the 66th anniversary of the Revolutionary General Strike, an action that paralyzed the nation and launched a mass movement to overthrow the Gerardo Machado dictatorship (1952-1958).

Convened by the July 26 Movement and led mainly by young workers and simple laborers, the strike had its greatest exponents in Havana and central Villa Clara province.

On April 9 and 10, 1958, more than 100 militants lost their lives in several cities of the country due to the brutal repression of the Batista dictatorship.

Although the action did not achieve the expected success, its example left valuable experiences for the revolutionary movement who displayed heroism.

After the setback, the historic leader, Fidel Castro, sent a letter to Faustino Perez, a member of the July 26 Movement, in which he said: I have the firm hope that in less time than many can imagine, we will have turned defeat into victory.

The Cuban Revolution triumphed eight months later, and a new stage in the country’s history started.
