Ministers of Foreign Affairs of CELAC to debate Mexico-Ecuador crisis

Tegucigalpa, Apr 9 (Prensa Latina) The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) will hold an extraordinary videoconference regarding the diplomatic crisis between Ecuador and Mexico, and which will have the participation of the ministers of Foreign Affairs

The organization seeks to take action after the recent forced entry of the Ecuadorian police into the compound of the Mexican embassy in Quito to arrest former vice president Jorge Glas.

Given the lack of respect for international agreements that stipulate the inviolability of embassies and recognize the right to asylum, Castro will call the Summit of Presidents scheduled for April 12th.

The call includes demanding that the government of Ecuador rectify the events that occurred in flagrant violation of the Vienna Convention regarding diplomatic relations and the Caracas Convention on asylum, as well as redirecting the appropriate procedure of the said regulations in the case of the request made by former Vice President Glas.

On behalf of Mexico, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Alicia Bárcena will formalize the establishment of a lawsuit before the International Court of The Hague and advocate for the support of her counterparts in the member countries of CELAC, in addition to sending a letter to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, to be presented to the UN, the Human Rights Council, and the General Assembly.

CELAC will promote dialogue as a solution to restore diplomatic ties between Mexico and Ecuador and, if this is not possible, it will assume political positions whether jointly, bilaterally, or in multilateral organizations, for full compliance.
