The call also seeks to commemorate the 76th anniversary of the “Bogotazo”, when an escalation of violent clashes and protests took place in the country’s capital and other cities, as a result of the assassination of the presidential candidate and leader of the Liberal Party Jorge Eliécer Gaitán.
The president of the Unitary Central of Workers (CUT), Fabio Arias, explained to the local press that given the precarious situation that the reforms are going through, the purpose is to draw the attention of Congress so that it does not continue to turn its back on the country. “Those social reforms were demanded in the social outbreak and for them the people also voted for Gustavo Petro, who is fulfilling his commitment of making them come true,” he noted.
Arias argued that the objective of social mobilization is to do everything possible so that government proposals do not sink – referring to the failed health reform in the Senate – so that Congress takes the people into account. The rally also seeks to commemorate the National Day of the Victims of the Armed Conflict.
In support of the CUT, the Union of Public Employees of the National Learning Service also invited the educational community to join the mobilization day. “We must remember that our union supports the conclusions of the unitary workers’ center, and accordingly we are defending the rights of the working class that have been taken away by these neoliberal, anti-democratic, and corrupt governments during these last three decades,” the organization expressed through a statement.
