Russia criticizes attempts to include Kosovo in Council of Europe

Moscow, Apr 8 (Prensa Latina) The attempts to make Kosovo a member of the Council of Europe show the degradation of that regional organization, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation announced on Monday.

On March 27, the Political Affairs Committee of the organization called for the entry of the self-proclaimed Republic of Kosovo into the Council.

The next step will be the plenary debate and the vote in the Assembly on April 18, the note of the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasizes.

In its opinion, “the authors of this initiative have easily exceeded the provision of the Council’s Charter that it has been created to strengthen the unity of the European peoples.”

In 1999, the armed confrontation between Albanian separatists of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and the Serbian army and police provoked the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) bombing of Yugoslavia, then consisting of Serbia and Montenegro.

Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia on February 17, 2008.
