Honduran President Xiomara Castro, who is the temporary president of CELAC, warned on social media that the Ecuadorian Government has violated the American Convention on Asylum and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which is why she called for the emergency meeting.
On April 5, the Ecuadorian National Police entered the Mexican Embassy by force to detain former Vice President Jorge Glas, to whom the President Andrés Manuel López Obrador Government had granted political asylum.
Glas has an arrest warrant in his country for allegedly embezzling funds to rebuild two earthquake-stricken provinces.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro stated that his country will request the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) to issue precautionary measures in favor of Glas, whose right to asylum has been barbarically violated.
In addition to CELAC, the Organization of American States (OAS) will meet urgently to examine the Vienna Convention violation by a member state.
