Another Russian region declares state of emergency due to floods

Moscow, Apr 8 (Prensa Latina) The Russian province of Kurgan, bordering Kazakhstan, introduced on Monday a state of emergency due to floods, the Governor of that region Vadim Shumkov stated.

“We are starting a regional emergency,” the governor posted on Telegram, calling on residents to evacuate, as the water level of the Tobol River is expected to be 11 meters or more, which will surpass the record high that dates back to 1994, when there was a major flood and the river rose over 10 meters.

Shumkov informed that according to meteorologists, not only the right bank of the river will be flooded, but also the central part of the city of Kurgan, the Vostochny and Kulatsky districts.

On Friday, April 5, a dam protecting the city of Orsk from flooding of the Ural River burst. As a result, the authorities ordered the eviction of the old part of the city. Several villages are now flooded.

In addition, flood risk was declared for the city of Tyumen, Western Siberia, and also for several towns in Kurgan province.
