Former vice president Glas held in maximum-security prison in Ecuador

Quito, Apr 6 (Prensa Latina) Former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, who was detained after a raid on the Mexican Embassy in this capital, was transferred to a maximum security prison in the city of Guayaquil on Saturday, official sources said.

The National Service for Comprehensive Attention to Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders (SNAI) issued a statement saying that under a strict security operation coordinated together with the Armed Forces and the National Police, citizen Jorge G. was taken to the Guayas Deprivation of Liberty Center (CPL) No. 3.

At the Center, a medical evaluation will be done by personnel from the Ministry of Public Health and, in compliance with the procedure provided for in the legal regulations, they will be held according to the initial classification criteria, the SNAI informed.

A video released on social networks shows how the former deputy president, surrounded by men in uniform, boards a plane of the Ecuadorian Air Force with great difficulty, where he was transferred to La Roca, as the aforementioned maximum-security prison is popularly known.

We hold the government of Daniel Noboa responsible for the health and life of Jorge Glas, stated the president of the Citizen Revolution movement, Luisa González, an organization of which the former official is a member.

According to González, Glas was beaten to an extent that it is difficult for him to walk and given what happened he also called on the international community to be vigilant about what is happening in Ecuador.

The former vice president was in the Flagrancy Unit since last night, after being detained inside the headquarters of the Mexican Embassy in Quito, where he had been since December and was waiting for a safe-conduct after receiving a positive response to his request of asylum.

Friday’s operation at the Mexican Embassy has been condemned nationally and internationally for violating Article 22 of the Vienna Convention and led to the rupture of bilateral relations.
