Mexico points to Israel for lack of progress in extradition case

Mexico City, Apr 5 (Prensa Latina) The lack of progress on the extradition request of Tomás Zerón is interpreted as a de facto protection by Israel and threatens to become a disruptive factor, the Mexican Foreign Ministry warned today.

Zerón, former head of the Criminal Investigation Agency, is wanted by the justice system of Mexico due to crimes of torture, violation of human rights and forced disappearance in the case of the 43 teaching students from Ayotzinapa, state of Guerrero, who disappeared in 2014.

He is also accused of misuse of powers, embezzlement, comparable fraud and criminal association, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs detailed in a statement, recalling that the formal extradition request to the State of Israel was presented on December 30, 2021.

“During this period and until April 2024, the Government of Mexico has reiterated on several occasions, at the highest political and diplomatic level, the importance it attaches to the case and the serious concern about the lack of progress,” he said.

The communication highlighted that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador sent letters to then Prime Minister Naftalí Bennett, in September 2021, and to his successor, Benjamín Netanyahu, in June 2023, requesting and reiterating the extradition of that individual.

According to him, both the Attorney General’s Office and the Foreign Ministry have repeatedly insisted on the prompt resolution of this issue with their counterparts from the State of Israel, through 22 videoconferences, at least 70 electronic communications and a visit by a Mexican delegation.

After multiple requests for updates, on December 14, the Israeli Ministry of Justice announced that the extradition request was in its final stage of analysis, information reiterated on February 1 by the Foreign Affairs Ministry of that nation.
