Gonzalez, who was a candidate for the presidency of the Republic in 2023, told Radio Pichincha radio station on Friday that the State Attorney General Diana Salazar ensured that she would prosecute the CR if they pushed the impeachment trial against him in the legislature.
Salazar said she was going to start with Jorge Glas and so she did, and that caused that the former vice president had to seek asylum in the Mexican Embassy, the CR representative underscored.
The authority thanked the Mexican Government for granting Glas asylum, something that, according to her, was expected because it proceeds from the legal point of view.
Likewise, the attorney general expressed her solidarity with the Mexican Ambassador Raquel Serur who was declared persona non grata by the Noboa Government on Thursday, based on comments made by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on the electoral process in Ecuador.
In that sense, Salazar questioned the handling of foreign policy by the current Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld, who went so far as to request authorization for the forces of law and order to enter the Mexican diplomatic headquarters in Quito to capture Glas.
Such request of the Ecuadorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility to arrest the former vice president was considered absurd and part of the political persecution against the politician, member of the RC, whose leader is Rafael Correa.
After receiving the political asylum permit from Mexico, Glas made a statement on his social media and expressed, “You can’t defeat those who never give up!”
