Uruguay’s PIT-CNT close to obtaining signatures for referendum

Montevideo, Apr 3 (Prensa Latina) Uruguay's trade union PIT-CNT is on Wednesday close to obtaining the necessary signatures to set up a referendum on the social security reform approved at the Government's request.

Until Tuesday, the trade union had collected 246,527 of 270,000 signatures it needs for consultation, less than a month before the deadline for submitting signatures to the Electoral Court ends.

If the union alliance succeeds in collecting the 10 percent signatures of the voters’ registry, the referendum on the pension system will be held on October 27, the day of national elections, in which Uruguayans will elect the presidency of the nation and the members of Congress.

The PIT-CNT proposes minimum retirement at age 60 and not at age 65, as the last Social Security Law establishes.

It also proposes eliminating the companies that manage and profit from pensions and states that the minimum pension must equal the minimum wage.
