Schools to virtual classes after flood in Ecuador’s capital city

Quito, Mar 3 (Prensa Latina) Some 74 educational institutions in the Ecuadorian capital will switch to virtual classes after the flood that occurred on Tuesday left one dead and 30 people affected.

The Ministry of Education informed that the measure will be in force until Friday and was taken due to the interruption of drinking water service in 12 neighborhoods of Quito, while the cleaning and rehabilitation of the Rumipamba catchment system is being carried out.

The cleansing works continue this Wednesday in the town of La Gasca, in this capital where, according to Mayor Pabel Muñoz, the emergency is not yet over. The officer pointed out that the municipality is coordinating actions with the National Government, the prefecture of the province of Pichincha, the Police, and the Armed Forces, for the recovery after the catastrophe.

From the National Government, we express our solidarity to the affected families of La Gasca. We have deployed our entire contingent in the sector to attend to the emergencies, the Secretary of Communication of the Presidency, Roberto Izurieta, detailed through his social network X.

Videos are circulating on social media showing how water and mud came down La Gasca avenue, as it happened in the same place on January 31, 2022, when 28 people died, although this time the intensity of the event was lower, Mayor Muñoz emphasized.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology predicted for this Wednesday a high level of rainfall in five provinces, including the capital.
