The joint work of the Bioplants Center, attached to the Máximo Gómez University, and the production unit, belonging to the Ceballos Agribusiness Company (DCballos), in Ciego de Avila, plays a significant role in applying scientific breakthroughs and technological innovation.

DCballos General Manager Exnier González pointed out that they have been working for four years on the Pineapple Varieties Diversification Project, with encouraging results in assessing the entire cycle, even the behavior of the planted prototypes.

The program consisted of ten kinds of research projects, including the production of plants in vitro, the adaptation and nursery phase, and studies on the morpho-agronomic characteristics under field conditions of the Champaka-F153, Pérola, Española Roja, and MD-2 varieties.

The assessment showed that the crops resist adverse conditions and adapt to the needs and scarcity of resources, which makes their cultivation feasible in the country’s current conditions.

Planting new pineapple varieties will allow diversifying production, replacing imports in the tourist sector, exporting better quality fruit, and increasing supplies to the industry to manufacture juices, fruit juice concentrates, and fruit in syrup.
