“Enough of miserable pensions” is the slogan of this rally that will start at the CUT headquarters early Wednesday.
After a decade of debates in Parliament, a Government bill to improve pensions was approved in the Chamber of Deputies in January and is now in the Senate Labor Commission, where the ruling coalitions do not have a majority.
The reform aims to create a mixed system to eliminate the monopoly of the Pension Fund Administrators (AFP, in Spanish), which profit from workers’ savings and provide miserable pensions.
According to official figures, 72 percent of pensions in the country are below the minimum wage, and a quarter are below the poverty line.
“Pensions must be improved with the six percent solidarity fund and a system that allows us to choose. Pensioners cannot wait any longer. We demand to end the right-wing blockade of the pension reform,” the CUT stated on its X profile.
