The newspaper El Observador reported that in the first three months of 2024 there were 81 homicides, less than the 98 recorded in 2023.
Based on the newspaper, the MI figures show disparities in the first quarters of the last years.
In 2020 and 2022 there were 101; in 2021 they totaled 72. However, the annual number may vary later: in 2019 there were 394 and in 2023 there were 383.
Homicides have been the main problem of the government of President Luis Lacalle Pou in terms of citizen security.
The MI quarterly report indicates that other crimes such as theft, robbery and cattle rustling decreased, but domestic violence did not.
