Official sources confirmed the news, underlining that the head of the Spanish Executive intends to get to know the harsh reality on the ground and, at the same time, to express his country’s renewed support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
Sanchez departed for Amman, Jordan, the first stop on a trip that will also take him to Saudi Arabia and Qatar, in all cases with the idea of discussing with his interlocutors the conflict between Israel and Hamas and the need to establish a cease-fire.
Very committed to the issue of alleviating the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, the President has already sent his Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, to the region on several occasions in diplomatic efforts as part of Madrid’s effort to serve as a bridge between the European Union (EU) and the Arab countries.
Sanchez has insisted on the need to recognize two states, Israel and Palestine, as essential for peace in the region.
The tour, which will conclude on Wednesday night, will also touch on aspects of cooperation and economic and commercial exchange with Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
In his program, Sanchez plans to visit the Palestinian refugee camp of Jabal el Hussein, in Jordan, one of the four established in 1952, with a population of 30,000 people, according to UNRWA.
The Spanish ruler, according to Moncloa sources, wishes to make UNRWA’s work visible, which is reviled by Israel and some of its Western allies, led by the United States, for having some members who allegedly collaborate with Hamas.
