Neighborhoods in South Africa affected by contaminated waters

Pretoria, Apr 1 (Prensa Latina) Drinking water in several neighborhoods in the central South African province of Gauteng is posing a risk for the people as its supply was contaminated with sewage effluent.

According to provincial authorities, the Emfuleni municipality confirmed that water in parts of the Vaal area, including Zone 7 of Sebokeng, Palm Springs, Beverly Hills, Lakeside and Everton, has been contaminated.

According to preliminary sanitary tests, the cause of the contamination is estimated to be a collapsed sewer pipe.

As a result, Emfuleni officials announced, the piped drinking water supply to all affected areas will be temporarily shut off for further investigation.

In this regard, Deputy Municipal Director Makhosonke Sangweni assured that he had given 48 hours to try to solve the problem.

At the moment, he revealed, water is being distributed through tankers to the affected areas.
