Rome, Mar 29 (Prensa Latina) Illegal immigrants who are minors and unaccompanied minors amount to 21,402 in Italy, of which more than 70 percent are between 16 and 18 years of age, official data indicate today.

A report of the Italian Ministry of Labor and Social Policies, disclosed on the website of the specialized publication Orizzonte Scuola Notizie, states that most of them arrived in disembarkations and more than half of them are currently in the southern regions of the country.

Marina Calderone, head of this agency, referred to these data in a recent hearing before Parliament, in which she revealed the results of an investigation on the presence of foreign unaccompanied minors in Italy, and remarked that the current figure is lower than the 23,226 registered at the end of 2023.

Marcone emphasized that the situation regarding this issue is complex, in the context of migratory dynamics, the reception and protection system, the evolution of the national and European regulatory framework, as well as in terms of inclusion measures.

Sixty-two percent of these unaccompanied minor immigrants arrived in boats and 73 percent are over 16 years old, while 11.0 percentage points are for those aged 15 and 13.7 points for those aged between seven and 14, while only 1.8 percent are under six years old, the minister said.
