Waters fall back but displacement of people continue in Uruguay

Montevideo, Mar 28 (Prensa Latina) More than 5,400 people are still out of their homes today in several Uruguayan departments, where heavy rains caused floods.

The latest report of the National Emergency System (Sinae) recognized 5,415 people displaced by the floods, which are beginning to retreat and allow the gradual return of the victims to their homes.

Of the total number of displaced persons, 2,526 correspond to Canelones and 2,833 to Durazno.

Six national roads remain closed, and electricity service has been mostly restored.

The Uruguayan government is preparing support programs for families affected by the recent floods which have affected most of the country in recent weeks.

The Ministry of Social Development (Mides) announced that the beneficiaries of the Uruguay Social and Plan Equidad programs, affected by the floods, will receive a threefold increase in state aid.

The governmental contribution was announced when the departmental governments with the greatest damages are counting the losses and citizens’ claims.
