A UN press release issued claimed a cessation of hostilities for the month of Ramadan as well as the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, two of the demands included in the document approved on Monday.
Nderitu further insisted on fulfilling obligations under international law and deplored attacks on civilians and their property, as well as all violence and hostilities against the population.
“Respect for international law must never be an abstract idea. It must lead to concrete results, most urgently protecting people’s lives, in times of peace and in times of war,” the diplomat underscored.
The adviser called for complying with the interim measures issued by the International Court of Justice, concerning the obligations under the Genocide Convention. Nderitu added that despite the court’s ruling the war in Gaza has continued; so, it is time that judicial decisions be complemented by action at all levels for peace to prevail.
“Accountability is an essential component of peace, as are efforts to rebuild and prevent, including through ongoing behind-the-scenes diplomatic initiatives and forward-looking peacebuilding where there has been violent conflict,” the official pointed out.
In that regard, the expert recalled that the very creation of the United Nations after World War II speaks of such aspiration.
The representative warned of using hate language and incitement that is normalized in the public space by both public figures and anonymous citizens.
