According to an official text, the program will consist of three phases, the first of which will begin on December 31 with a ban on the importation of nylon bags, used for the purchase of daily consumer items.
By March 2025, the government will prohibit the sale and distribution of these containers, and one month later, in April, it will suspend the entry into the country of absorbents and food boxes made of white foam.
The third stage of the initiative will come into effect in November 2025 with the complete cessation of imports and marketing in the country of plastic cups, spoons and other plastic utensils.
For the authorities of St. Kitts and Nevis, this is a decisive step towards protecting the environment and guaranteeing sustainable development for future generations.
Likewise, the plan responds to the commitments assumed in global forums for the conservation of the environment and thus the insular territory will follow the steps of a hundred countries, including 12 in the Caribbean, which apply partial or total bans to single-use plastic.
