Earthquakes damage hundreds of schools in Afghanistan

Kabul, Mar 28 (Prensa Latina) The Education Department of the Afghan province of Herat reported on Thursday that more than 280 schools were damaged by earthquakes that hit the province in recent months.

Authorities said many of the schools are now unusable and require reconstruction.

The head of the Herat Education Department, Rahmatullah Jabir, said that in recent months, international organizations and the government have rebuilt more than 80 damaged schools in the quake-hit villages.

Several students in Herat have said that due to the destruction of their schools, they have been forced to study in open spaces.

For their part, teachers claim that the absence of standard classrooms and a peaceful educational environment negatively affects the teaching process.

According to Herat Education Department’s statistics, there are more than 1,400 active schools in the province; some of which lack buildings and students take classes in cold or hot climates, under tents or in open spaces.
