The aforementioned group considered it necessary to seek the consensus of two thirds of the members of Parliament to support the provisions of the agreement, signed in this capital on December 18, 2023.
The Finnish Government also published the aforementioned agreement in order to receive the population’s comments regarding the entry and movement of US troops in this country and their access to the facilities of the national forces, among other aspects.
The agreement provides free access to at least 15 objectives of the local armed forces, set out in annexes to the signed agreement, which also shows how combat resources, security, jurisdiction and the legal status of US troops.
The agreement in no way establishes the possibility of a permanent deployment of US forces in this country, as these should be of a rotating nature, the Foreign Ministry clarified.
In May 2022, Finland and Sweden resigned their status as neutral countries in order to apply for membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which both nations have already joined.
