Angola and African Union addressed situation in DRC

Luanda, March 27 (Prensa Latina) The president of Angola, João Lourenço, and his counterpart of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, in his capacity as acting president of the African Union (AU), addressed today the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Both leaders spoke by telephone, according to the Angolan Presidency, and during the dialogue the Mauritanian head of state expressed his support for Lourenço’s mediation efforts to restore peace in the DRC.

They also discussed regional issues and coordination within the AU Assembly Board, a structure in which Angola has held the first vice presidency since the summit of the regional entity held last February.

Both in the context of that continental meeting, and in subsequent days, the Angolan president has developed intense diplomatic activity as a mediator appointed by the AU for the conflict in the east of the DRC that involves Rwanda.

In individual meetings held in Luanda with their counterparts from the DRC, Félix Tshisekedi, and from Rwanda, Paul Kagame, both parties agreed to return to dialogue and a first meeting was held at the level of foreign ministers on March 22, also in the capital. Angolan. The day before, Lourenço also met with the president of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, acting president of the Community of East African States (ECAC), with whom he agreed to continue working in coordination to seek a solution to the conflict in the east of the DRC.

Mauritania was designated to take charge of the African Union and Angola, candidate for the rotating presidency of the pan-African organization in 2025, holds the first vice-presidency, the Republic of the Congo and Ghana the second and third vice-presidencies.
