Military cordon against gangs in northern El Salvador

San Salvador, Mar 25 (Prensa Latina) A military encirclement is underway in several districts of Chalatenango Sur, northern El Salvador, to dismantle gang groups operating in that area of the country, authorities reported today.

President Nayib Bukele announced the deployment of five thousand military and one thousand police officers to eliminate members of the 18 Sureños gang who in recent days killed two people in that region where the districts of San José Cancasque, San Antonio Los Ranchos, Potonico and San Isidro Labrador are located.

The information was disclosed last night by the president in his social network X and in a statement from the Presidential House where the president said that ‘We will not stop until we eradicate the little that remains of the gangs’.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Defense, René Merino Monroy, together with the director of the National Civil Police (PNC), Mauricio Arriaza Chicas, lead the security actions involved in the siege.

As a police institution and with instructions from the Security Cabinet, especially from the President of the Republic, no evidence of criminal structures will be allowed, said Arriaza.

The PNC recently reported two homicides in the Chalatenango area.

These occurred in San José Cancasque on March 18 and in Chalatenango on March 22, and the alleged perpetrators were captured.
