CELAC coordinators proposed a common fund to support Haiti

Tegucigalpa, Mar 22 (Prensa Latina) The National coordinators of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) proposed creating a common fund to support the Haitian population and help them to get out of the crisis Haiti is suffering.

This is the second meeting held this week by CELAC on the subject, which was organized by Honduras as pro tempore president of the mechanism, and it was chaired on Thursday by Deputy Foreign Minister Gerardo Torres.

As disclosed by the Honduran Foreign Ministry on social networks, the initiative presented was supported by countries such as Cuba and Colombia and other members of the bloc present at the meeting.

The objective of the common fund is to ease cooperation, humanitarian assistance, medical care, support to address violence, and guarantee access to food and basic health elements, the Ministry stated.

It was also agreed to seek additional funds with allied support countries in the region, and with international organizations such as the Development Bank of Latin America, the Inter-American Development Bank, the European Union, and China, to expedite the process of democratic recovery in Haiti.

The possibility of forgiving Haiti’s external debt as a measure to alleviate its financial burden and facilitate its process towards the recovery of its development was also raised.

The participants also highlighted the need to establish effective security actions to address criminal groups, including training the police and strengthening the Armed Forces to guarantee control and stability in the country.
