The coordinator for Mesoamerica of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Adoniram Sanches, said that they are carrying out a workshop to evaluate the critical forest biomes in that territory, the results of which will be presented to the Global Environment Facility. Darién is home to one of the largest Intact Forest Landscapes (IFP) in Mesoamerica, with high levels of globally important biodiversity and substantial carbon stocks, he said.
The initiative will focus on tasks such as conservation and restoration to strengthen governance, as well as management and enforcement of protected areas.
It also works to establish legal and regulatory frameworks, generate market/finance mechanisms and capacities and finally, coordinated and improved learning including regional cooperation to increase capacities, knowledge and access to information, the expert said.
Each time World Forest Day is celebrated, Sanches added, countries are encouraged to adopt initiatives at the local, national and international levels for the organization of activities related to forests and trees.
