Skerrit explained they received their keys in a ceremony at the House of Representatives Conference Center.
We are transforming lives, giving hope to our citizens and ensuring that they live in comfort and dignity, the prime minister emphasized through his profile on the X network.
Likewise, he highlighted the words of the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Melissa Poponne-Skerrit, who told the beneficiaries: “may the walls know joy, may each room know laughter and may each window opens to great possibilities.”
To date, the authorities of Dominica have delivered 231 accommodations through the Housing Recovery Project (HRP), an initiative that the government of this small Caribbean nation launched in response to the damage caused by natural phenomena.
Small island states like Dominica are increasingly vulnerable to disasters resulting from heavy rainfall and category five hurricanes with the continued impact of climate change around the world, along with volcanic and seismic risks.
In response, the HRP is an island-wide initiative designed to build resilience in the sector by supporting safe, owner-driven reconstruction of destroyed homes across Dominica.
According to the government, immediately after Hurricane Maria, which hit the country in 2017, emergency housing recovery went into effect with the assistance of many humanitarian agencies.
This Project seeks to rebuild 676 small houses that were completely destroyed, belonging to vulnerable people, in accordance with internationally recognized resistance standards, best practices in engineering and construction, among other indicators.
