Relatives of women who have been killed as a result of this crime held a sit-in on Wednesday outside the Attorney General’s Office to remember the victims.
In 2023, 321 women, girls and teenagers were murdered in this South American nation, while so far in 2024 more than 35 femicides have been registered.
This Tuesday, the National Assembly (Parliament) unanimously approved a resolution requesting President Daniel Noboa to declare an emergency to the system to prevent and eradicate violence against women.
The approved motion also asks the Ministry of Economy and Finance to allocate resources for the implementation and execution of public policies to address the current situation of gender violence.
The president of Aldea Foundation, Geraldine Guerra, appeared before the plenary session of the legislature and pointed out that four out of 10 girls are victims of sexual violence and that as never before, in this 2024, there are missing women.
